Difference Between a College and a University

In the U.S., the words “college” and “university” are commonly used interchangeably, but they are in fact quite different. In many parts of the world “college” refers to a school that is attended by students at a high school level, whereas the word “university” is used to describe what is typically thought of when thinking about higher education. This can make it confusing for international students who are looking to study in the U.S. Below are some of the main differences between colleges and universities.

Colleges are usually smaller, with smaller class sizes and student populations, and typically focus on a specialized field of study. They offer certificates, associate and/or bachelor’s degrees, and are typically attended for two to four years. There are different types of colleges to serve varying student populations and interests, including community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and vocational colleges or trade schools.

Universities are four-year institutions that offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. They are larger than colleges; typically enrolling tens of thousands of students across undergraduate and graduate levels, and are therefore usually the home of specialized institutions like law and medical schools.

Chong ended up being sentenced to nine months in prison and fined $20,000. The raid was part of “Operation Pipe Dreams” and "Operation Headhunter," which resulted in raids on 100 homes and businesses nationwide that day and indictments of 55 individuals. Is Weed A Gateway Drug?

The gateway drug theory states that so-called “soft drugs” provide an apparently safe psychoactive experience that makes naive users more open to experimenting with other, harder drugs. While the gateway drug theory was widely accepted when it was first introduced, it has not really held up in further research. There are several factors that determine whether someone is likely to develop a drug problem, and while marijuana has been proven to prime the brain for enhanced responses to other drugs, it's hard to say whether or not it is solely responsible for individuals developing addictions to harder drugs. While most people who develop severe problems with hard drugs had early experiences with marijuana, research shows that most people who use marijuana will not go on to use these harder substances. This leans more towards the idea that other factors, such as an individual’s environment, or even a genetic link are more at fault for the development of hard drug use.
